Pex Products
Pex (cross-linked polyethylene) have been in use in Europe since the early 60's for plumbing, radiant heat and snow melt applications. Pex was introduced in the 80's to the US market, and has grown substantially since that point. From the plumbing perspective, the ease of installation as well as the ability to keep constant pressure flowing at all end-points are many of the reasons for its growth.
The ability to install home runs from the distribution point - Pex Manifold - to the end faucets, allow a cost affective install, as well as the assurance that when a toilet is flushed - that it no longer affects the water pressure in the shower. Pex is more durable under temperature extremes, chemical attack, and better resists deformation, making PEX an excellent material for hot water and other domestic applications.
From the heating perspective, radiant floor installation coupled with Geothermal and hot water furnace installs are both cost affective use of this technology. This same technology is utilized in snow melt applications.
Tubing is manufactured with and without an oxygen barrier - the non - barrier product is utilized in domestic plumbing applications - the barrier in the radiant heat applications. Oxygen barriers keep the infiltration of corrosive gases from occuring - thus protecting valves and pumps from early failure.
The fittings listed below are the most common ones utilized in Pex installation. Tools for the installation of Pex include crimping tools and cutters. There are also installation brackets and clips available to assist in the install process.
